A Tale of the Elk Valley
The story of this painting is a powerful one, and accurately represents current environmental events in our area, something the commissioner of this piece feels passionately about.
This painting is about the Elk Valley; capturing the relationship of wildlife and the impact the coal mines have on their habitat. Big Horned Sheep seem to be particularly affected. My client observed that there seems to be a correlation between high elevation grass lands, the sheep's preferred grazing grounds, and coal strata that lies beneath them.
The black and white mountain represents the next target on the chopping block to be decimated in the name of coal mining, and further disruption for the sheep, who are geographically located on the east side of the valley. The grizzlies and goats are typically found on the west side, and can see this incoming travesty from their vantage point. Elk and Moose prefer to hang out in the valley.
It's not all doom and gloom though! The vibrant colours represent the beauty and dynamic energy that the Elk Valley is known for (for now!).
The carefully selected colour and line work weaves together the entire story and demonstrates the delicate interconnection between humans and nature.
The Commission Process
We went back and forth quite a few times during the design process, tweaking and fine tuning, until I had a fairly accurate representation of the painting she had visualized.
I had her over for a final look, once the outline had been transposed onto the canvas. Once the paint starts flowing and I'm in 'The Zone', nobody gets to look at it (unless you happen to drop by!) until I'm at least 3 coats of paint in, and it no longer looks like an imbecile threw up on the canvas!
After 3 months of work, I invited her for an initial reveal. This was a particularly nerve wracking moment for me, as the colour had only been discussed with references to colours in my other paintings as a working palette. It's at this point that you know if you've been on the same page or not!
I'm happy to report that the colour was a success and after a few tweaks, the original painting was completed 🥳
All prices are for rolled canvases. I offer canvas stretching/mounting for those who are able to pick up locally. Please contact me at the time of ordering to arrange this.
